缅军非法将缅北难民土地卖给中国公司引发争议(中英文双语)

【Chinese firms accused shady land deals in Kachin State, Published on Monday, 25 March 2013, Eleven】Chinese companies have taken control of former oil fields in Kachin State by purchasing the land for agricultural purposes, Kachin Peace Network organiser Khun Jar said.

He said the companies had used the pretext of agricultural development to buy land that had been an oil production area in the past and that the land purchases are not registered in state land records. Khun Jar also said there was no record of the deal in records of foreign investment.

The land was bought from local companies with the stated purpose of growing rubber plantations, Khun Jar said.

The site in the Hakawng valley of Myitkyina District, had been an oil field during the Second World War and is adjacent an oil-producing area in India, he said.

At a meeting of the Union Peacemaking Committee at the Myanmar Peace Centre on March 16, representatives of Kachin civic organisations called for a ban on investment in the state until peace was restored. The demand was forwarded to Presidential Office Minister Aung Min.

Khun Jar said that land belonging to those who fled conflict was being grabbed while they were seeking safety in camps. “When the refugees return to their homes they are unsure whether they can get their land back,” he said.

Chinese investment in the state has been controversial in the past. Opposition to the China-backed Myitsone dam project was so intense that President Thein Sein suspended the project.
