祭母文 An Elegy for My Mother
1919年10月8日 October 8, 1919
呜呼吾母，My mother, alas!
遽然而死。Abruptly away you did pass.
寿五十三，You died at the age fifty-three,
生有七子。Bearing seven babies.
七子余三，Of the seven survive three,
即东民覃。Namely, Dong, Min and Tan
其他不育，Prematurely expired the rest:
二女三男。Two daughters and three sons.
育吾兄弟，In rearing us brothers,
艰辛备历。You experienced unspeakable hardships.
摧折作磨，Ascribe to the torment and trials,
因此遘疾。You suffered illness.
中间万万，What constituted the painful history
皆伤心史。Are the innumerable hard lots.
不忍卒书，I cannot bear to write out the whole thereof,
待徐温吐。I’ll wait and then unbosom slowly and mildly the particulars.
今则欲言，What I’ll speak today
只有两端。Are merely two points.
一则盛德，One is about the lofty morality,
一则恨偏。And the other is about the lingering regrets.
吾母高风，Universal love is the first one
首推博爱。Of my mother’s noble characteristics.
远近亲疏，The kith and kin, close or distance,
一皆覆载。Without discrimination your gracious patronage embraces.
恺恻慈祥，With your compassion and kindness,
感动庶汇。You moved the masses.
爱力所及，Your mighty love toward the populace
原本真诚。Sprang from sincerity and genuineness.
不作诳言，Never did you say deceitful words
不存欺心。Nor harbor a heart of bullying others.
整饬成性，Solemn has your composition become,
一丝不诡。And you are free of anything treacherous.
手泽所经，Whatever you did
皆有条理。Was in orderliness.
头脑精密，Your brain is precise and scrupulous in deliberation,
劈理分情。And acute and subtle in reason and feelings.
事无遗算，Never did you act without premeditation,
物无遁形。And nothing could escape your good eyes.
洁净之风，Your purity and integrity
传遍戚里。Procures you a high reputation among relatives and neighbors.
不染一尘，Both in mind and body, where in the interior or in the exterior,
身心表里。You are spotless.
五德荦荦，The five virtues are salient,
乃其大端。Which are the main features of your moral concepts.
合其人格，Your personality still lives
如在上焉。As if in the upper part of the house.
恨偏所在，What is regrettable
三纲之末。Lies in the last of the three cardinal guides.
有志未伸，Unrealized remain your aspirations;
有求不获。And unfed are your claims.
精神痛苦，of all the mental pains,
以此为卓。Nothing can be more grievous than this,
天乎人欤？Heaven or man?
倾地一角。Who makes one corner of the earth collapse.
次则儿辈，Secondly, your sons,
育之成行。Fostering them into lines.
如果未熟，If immature,
介在青黄。They are in times of difficulty between prosperities.
病时揽手，When we were ill, with a grieved heart,
酸心结肠。You held our hands.
但呼儿辈，And bade us sons
各务为良。Be engaged in honest works.
又次所怀，Thirdly, you cherished hospitality and love
好亲至爱。For relatives and friends.
或属素恩，Some are among our benefactors,
或多劳瘁。And others suffer from overwork and tiredness.
大小亲疏，Whether major or minor, distant or close,
均待报赉。They remain to be offered donation and recompense.
总兹所述，All these mentioned above
盛德所辉。Reflect your sublime morality with gloss.
以秉悃忱，Which I take over with earnest devotion,
则效不违。And follow without the slightest transgression.
致于所恨，What, to your regret, remains unaccomplished
必补遗缺。I am bound to realize.
念兹在兹，This I’ll bear in my mind constantly,
此心不越。And this conviction of mine I’ll never transgress.
养育深恩，On rearing us brothers, your grace, fathomless and boundless,
春晖朝霭。Looks like vernal sunlight and morn haze.
报之何时？When can I repay your kindness?
精禽大海。Just as Jing bird’s fills up the sea of vastness.
呜呼吾母，Alas, my mother,
母终未死。Eventually you do not decease.
躯壳虽隳，Although your body will fall into decay,
灵则万古。Your soul will live through ages.
有生一日，So long as I live in this world,
皆报恩时。Every day is the date for requiting your munificence.
有生一日，So long as I live in this world,
皆伴亲时。All the time I’ll keep your company as if in your presence.
今也言长，Today I have much to say,
时则苦短。But time fails me to unbosom all my words.
惟挈大端，Here I can only focus on the major phase,
置其粗浅。And give a brief and cursory utterance.
此时家奠，Now the whole family is holding a memorial ceremony
尽此一觞。With only a cup of wine as a sacrifice.
后有言陈，I’ll say something more to you, later,
与日俱长。Which will be as long as the coming days.
尚飨！Pray enjoy yourself with the sacrificial offerings!
